This project experience includes a short 2-3 Day exercise followed up by a longer final project that teaches the creative process steps, visual literacy, and composition among other visual art concepts in an easy to understand package.
It includes:
- A Private Video link to a tutorial on how to make a simple 3-5 move collage along with some best practices suggestions. 2 examples are made in the video.
- A downloadable Handout that includes requirements and extensions to help guide students towards making a high quality collage work of art, which includes a few student examples.

An exploratory project great for an intro to Art Foundations Class or for an AP Studio Class, it exposes students to every drawing/painting medium they may encounter throughout the year/semester, allowing them to gain an understanding and comfort for many mediums and processes, while experiencing drawing and painting as a powerful language, capable of expressing things that are intangible or invisible, such as your memories, ideas, musings, emotions and more. Sometimes, people draw something to convey realism. This is what most people think of when mentioning drawing and it's likely the most intimidating.
There are no mistakes, only things you put in and take out. Assert and obliterate by giving yourself to the process of doing and undoing, you will create drawings automatically that speak metaphorically.
This project teaches layering and the commitment necessary for the artistic process, a process that will enrich all of the student’s learning by prompting them to give themselves to, and open up to the impermanence of mark making.
Students will experience and discuss the basics of composition, including the Principles of Design. This discussion takes place after students have spent a couple of days working.
Learn how drawing is a dialogue, or form of communication.
Generate excitement about the class, break students of all the bad habits they often bring into the classroom. Art is an action, which requires energy, and that energy needs to be transferred into the work. Work can be fun, and this work requires energy. Build confidence and curiosity for the creative process.
Session 1 of 5. This session provides students with direct instruction throughout the 40 minute class. Students interpret those instructions freely, but the repetitive direct nature of guidance frees students of conventional anxiety often involved in art-making. It combines an SEL lens with the creative process along with materials exploration all while students gain new art process experiences in a free, forgiving, and inspiring atmosphere. Students learn the importance of building layers, of embracing mistakes, and begin to form a visual vocabulary.

Any student will build confidence and excitement for the art-making process. There are no mistakes, only things you put in and take out. Assert and obliterate by giving yourself to the process of doing and undoing, you will create drawings automatically that speak metaphorically.
In this session, we will build on the previous layer, asserting and obliterating with new colors and textures. I consider sessions 1 and 2 the ground layers. Students will begin to take over more control in future sessions, making more choices, while also developing more visual literacy skills. Currently, the focus continues on responding to my specific instructions. Feel free to add some of your own twists and ideas. This session is often unique, based on the experience I’m having with the students and noticing a collective direction or need for further development.

In session 3 of 5 in the Expressive Abstract project tutorial we continue building on the previous layers but with some new twists. After letting someone else work on their piece, the focus turns towards making more purposeful decisions and building towards a final vision. We will add a few more colors in this session and journey more deeply into the problem-solving process.
With problem-solving mistakes are an opportunity to learn from and are applied in this session as the artist cultivates a more focused vision for the future of the work.
After ending this session I have students watch a video I made on the Elements and Principles of Design which a link is provided for with the downloaded PDF.
Video Tutorial: Expressive Abstract Drawing & Painting Project Tutorial - Sessions 4 & 5

In sessions 4 and 5 of the Expressive Abstract project tutorial, we turn our focus to reflection and critique, building a visual literacy that can help us plan and execute our final vision. We continue building on the previous layers but while also handing over more control to the artist. We will use an inner dialogue built on the assertions and obliterations of past moves, successes and mistakes, to bring the project to a close.
This session involves references to class discussions and critiques that are helpful for the process. Because the artist takes over more freedom with the process I have combined sessions 4 and 5 into one. This is a time in the process when I would have a lot of individual conversations with each student.

Creative Materials Challenge - Remote Learning

This is how I introduce students to the class and creative process, priming them for engagement and discussion about creativity. This version is a 2 day project experience that is meant for the remote learning environment. Students take a moment to practice mindfulness, engage with the outdoors for a scavenger hunt and use their found objects to explore the creative process. This is meant to be the first project experience for students in a creative studies class, providing a foundation for future cognition and creative learning experiences. This is about facilitating student agency in the classroom and it connects to learner-agency in any venue. Student Autonomy as a source of curriculum experiences is the #1 ingredient needed to generate authentic learning and actualize the creative process, both of which are the framework our schools and places of learning should prioritize.
